Poets celebrate the month of love

The aim of these shows is to encourage people to show love to one another, as we are in the month of love, but also to revive the spirit of reciting poetry.

A young man by the name of Sipho’esihle Mtshali (26) from Shoba held a Valentine’s show at Bhekezulu Hall on Sunday. The ‘All About Love’ poetry show featured different poets and artists who gathered to celebrate in the name of love.

Sipho’esihle, who is a poet himself with the stage name ‘Sphe imbongi’, mentioned that this is his second time organising a poetry show. The first one was in 2019 in Gauteng. The aim of these shows is to encourage people to show love to one another, as we are in the month of love, but also to revive the spirit of reciting poetry. “Vryheid is not big on poems and poets. Many people around our community do not like poetry, saying that poems are boring. One thing they should know is that poems need someone who has a good listening skill, a love for writing, and a love of poems themselves.”

People and poets from different areas attended the show to promote love and poetry. Sipho says he started writing poems when he was only 18 years old. He elaborated that he used to be shy when standing in front of people and reciting the poems he had written. However, he says he found the courage back in his high school days, when his IsiZulu teacher would allow him to say his poems in front of the class. From there, he started reciting his poems at the school assembly.

“I am a loner and I write most of my poems when I am alone with my thoughts,” he explains. ‘’I am very pleased that I organised this show, as people showed so much support and love. They also behaved themselves,” he laughs. Sipho is big on social media and has a video of himself reciting a poem entitled ‘kulula ukuthola umuntu omthandayo’, meaning it’s easy to find someone you love. His video reached one million views. “I would like to thank everyone I worked with while I was still preparing for the show, especially Kwazi Nsele and Slou Poison, and also everyone who attended the show.’’ One can follow and book him on his Facebook page: Sphe imbongi.
