Four arrested during Osizweni crime clean-up –

Osizweni SAPS carried out an intelligence-driven, multi-disciplinary operation last week. Joining in were members of Osizweni Crime Prevention and the Newcastle Public Order Policing unit.

From February 11 to 13, the combined team arrested four suspects for various offences.

Lizzy Arumugam, from the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, stated that the operations team was formed following a number of tip-offs.

The first lead sent the team to Osizweni’s Section A, where a cache of illegal firearms and ammunition was being kept.

When police arrived, they arrested a 42-year-old suspect for illegally possessing a 9mm pistol, 10 rounds of live ammunition and one empty magazine,” said Arumugam

She added the estimated street value of the recovered pistol is R13 000.

The operations team then proceeded to a house in the Mndozo area, where a 19-year-old suspect was arrested on for dealing in marijuana (dagga). The estimated street value of the confiscated dagga is R2 000.

A 27-year-old suspect was arrested in the same area a short while later, after being caught in possession of Mandrax. Five whole tablets and two half-tablets were seized by SAPS officials. The drugs are estimated to be worth around R800.

Members then went to Blaauwbosch and arrested a 22-year-old man for possessing three whole and four half Mandrax tablets.”

Members also found 26 small parcels of dagga, with an estimated street value of R1 800.

All suspects have since appeared in the Madadeni Magistrates Court, concluded Arumugam.
