Woman behind bars for false rape claims – A 28-year-old woman has been charged with perjury after falsely accusing two men of rape.
According to Lizzy Arumugam from the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, the woman initially claimed that on the evening of February 11, she was woken by the sound of her door opening.
The woman reportedly claimed a man that she knew brandished a knife and accused her of not paying rent. She further alleged the man and his brother then raped her.
A sexual assault case was opened at Osizweni SAPS. The case was later transferred to the Newcastle FCS (Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences) Unit for further investigation, and the two brothers – aged 34 and 36 – were arrested.
The investigating officer conducted an extensive investigation and determined that the complainant had lied under oath,” explained Arumugam.
The brothers were both released from police custody, and the woman was instead arrested and charged with perjury.
She appeared in the Madadeni Magistrates Court on Monday (February 14) and the case was remanded. The woman remains in police custody.
We once again appeal to residents not to report false cases because valuable police resources are wasted chasing false allegations, depriving genuine crime victims of justice,” concluded Arumugam.
