Farm dwellers hold peaceful protest in Ladysmith

The aim of the protest was to submit a memorandum to the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform & Rural Development

Farm dwellers from Ladysmith and surrounding areas held a peaceful protest today (February 16).

The aim of the protest, which was led by the Shishiliza Workers Association, was to submit a memorandum of demands to the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform & Rural Development.

The march started from Settlers Drive and proceeded up Harrismith Road, as the protesters chanted slogans. The final destination was the Rural Development & Land Reform office in Beacon Road.

It is alleged by the protesters that farmers abuse them and their rights are being violated. Furthermore, they say that the department is not attending to their complaints and some department officials are rude to them.

Shishiliza Workers Association president Mr Nhlanhla Mthabela handed over the memorandum.

uThukela District director of the Department of Rural Development, Mr Siege Haschke, received the memorandum of demands on behalf of the minister.

Police and Public Safety were present to monitor the march.
