DUNDEE KZN: Laura flies the Dundee flag high in Germany

"Although the Germans are strict and hostile when they don't know you, as soon as they get to know you, they are nice people", exclaimed Laura.

Laura Lukhele held the Dundee flag high all the way over in Germany during a student exchange programme.
As a former Dundee High student, Laura was part of the Rotary Exchange Programme that gave her a chance to live in Germany for a year.
“It was a life-changing experience, especially because I was the first black girl under the Rotary programme to go abroad.
“Moreover, because I’m from Peacevale location in the small town of Dundee.
This proves that no matter where you come from, your dreams are valid,” says Laura.
Her dream as a young girl was to travel to Paris.
While this particular destination has not been reached as yet, she is glad to have had the opportunity to stay in Germany.
“Germany is a beautiful country!
Although the Germans are strict and hostile when they don’t know you, as soon as they get to know you, they are nice people.
“Luckily for me, the first host family taught me German during the lockdown.
“Since we could not go anywhere, I used that time to learn the language.
It was shocking for me to find out that English is not a universal language, as most Germans communicate in their own language and are not fluent in English,” said Laura, who is now fluent in German (speak, read and write).
Laura also explained that the schooling system in Germany is very different from that in South Africa.
While she was in Germany, she got to meet other exchange students, as she was part of the international group.

Laura’s Poem

Germany
From the day I heard your name,
My happiness went wild, I must say !
Thoughts of expectation on how you looked like,
were surely exceeded way above the sky.
I loved your German-speaking people,
Because they projected kindness and innocent love to me.
They accepted the African me.
Beyond words, they groomed me into the mature and disciplined German mindset.
I found a missing puzzle that had my life set.
I appreciate your wisdom and teachings,
especially the lessons in the Breze bakery and restaurants.
I cherish your education, adventure, and memories in all shapes and sizes.
My favourite time was when I engaged with your Bavarian-made cars.
My heart smiled and your engine connected beyond the stars.
Herzlichen dank von mir,
es war ein schönes Treffen mit dir.
Bis bald Meine Liebe.
