Over the last two weeks, joint operations between the Amajuba and Vryheid Stocktheft Units, Crime Intelligence MDOC, and Ithemba Security resulted in the successful arrest of five suspects and the recovery of 87 cattle.

January 27- Nine cattle recovered and five suspects detained

Mornè Potgieter, Ithemba Security’s Operational Manager, explained that members of Crime Intelligence MDOC collaborated with SAPS Amajuba District Stocktheft Task Team and Ithemba Security Mountain Unit to conduct an intelligence-driven operation after receiving information about a suspect in possession of stolen cattle taken in Normandien.

“The operational team proceeded to the suspects’ house as indicated by the informant,” said Potgieter.

One suspect was arrested for the theft of livestock, while a second suspect was arrested for being in possession of six stolen cattle.

“A third suspect was then arrested for being in possession of two more stolen cattle,” he said.

Following the discovery that a ninth cattle had been slaughtered and sold to a local shop owner, the teams arrested two more suspects.

“The suspects were apprehended at Normandien Police Station, and the exhibits recovered were returned to their rightful owners,” Potgieter said.

The estimated total value of the recovered cattle was around R98 000.

January 29 – 78 stolen cattle recovered

WATCH – 78 Stolen cattle successfully recovered in Vryheid:

A joint operation involving the Amajuba and Vryheid Stocktheft Units, as well as the Ithemba Security Mountain Unit, resulted in the recovery of 78 cattle stolen from the Free State.

Potgieter claimed that information obtained led to the recovery of 76 cattle in the Shoba area of Vryheid, where it was confirmed that the cattle had been sold by the suspects.

“Further investigations wound up leading us to Utrecht, where we recovered two more stolen cattle,” he explained.

All 78 cattle were positively identified and returned to their rightful owner.

The value of the recovered cattle was estimated to be around R1.3-million.

“Congratulations to all the dedicated and hardworking members on this outstanding result,” Potgieter concluded.
