Remembered as a person who saved countless lives, Moses Pillay was a well-known paramedic who served the community and surrounding areas for 29 years.

Pillay (53) passed away on January 30 after sustaining critical injuries in a vehicle collision on December 22.

Born and raised in Estcourt, he was married to Sunitha. The couple had two children – Aaron (27) and Jocelyn Sarjoo (30), as well as three grandchildren aged 12 months, one year and five years. Pillay’s son Aaron explains that his father had been working as a paramedic for almost three decades.

He was a familiar face in the Emergency Medical Services at Estcourt Provincial Hospital, where he worked for 28 years.

Seven months ago, he joined KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services in Pietermaritzburg. He certainly had a passion for his job.

“He loved helping people in crisis, no matter the hour,” said Aaron.

Apart from being a first responder, Pillay was also a talented guitarist.

“He played the guitar and sang at Cornerstone Full Gospel Church for many years. His hobbies included fishing and he also loved playing cards,” said his son.

While the family comes to terms with losing a pillar of strength, they send gratitude to everyone who supported them while Pillay was in hospital after the accident.

“As a family, we would like to say thank you to every person who helped with prayer while being in hospital,” concluded Aaron.
