ESTCOURT KZN: Doors to education open in Weenen

Since 2008, Weenen Primary School, which has an enrolment of 356 learners, has been battling to accommodate their Grade R learners

It was another proud moment for the education fraternity in the Uthukela district as a new early childhood development (ECD) centre was officially opened in Weenen today (February 3).

The learners were crammed into an old physical education change-room and teaching and learning continued under difficult circumstances.

In October last year, the school principal Mr Naidoo approached Gift of the Givers Estcourt community liaison officer Jaaved Khan with a request for a Grade R classroom.

Within a month of writing a motivational letter to the foundation’s founder Dr Imtiaz Solliman, the school’s request was successful.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of R350 000 from Ford SA and Ford Credit, the school’s dream started to materialise.

Construction of the brand new ECD concluded in January this year.

This morning staff, learners and stakeholders from Weenen Primary School warmly welcomed sponsors, Education Department and local government officials and other guests to the opening ceremony where they shared their pride and joy, appreciation and hopes with some of the stakeholders that made it possible.

300 stationery packs were also donated to the school on behalf of the Gift of the Givers.
