Two bodies recovered from river in Bhethani area

Community members are still in shock after the drowning tragedy

The bodies of two men, aged 36 and 37, were recovered from the Ngcongcosi River in the Bhethani area of Bergville this afternoon (January 19).

Community members in the area are still in shock after the double drowning.

It is believed that the two men were loading sand onto a truck on the riverbank. When they had finished, they went to wash their hands in the river. It is then alleged that one of them slipped and fell in the mud. The other man tried to rescue him and they were both swept away.

Eyewitnesses called the police, who responded swiftly to the scene.

The two bodies were recovered by divers from Pietermaritzburg Search & Rescue, the Newcastle K9 Unit and Ladysmith K9 Search & Rescue.
