Drowning victim’s body found 4 days later in Klip River

The body was found wedged in the mud on the banks near Hobsland

A man sadly drowned in the Klip River at Peacetown on Sunday (January 16). Due to heavy rain, which was persistent in the entire area, the river was too fast-flowing to be searched.

Earlier today (January 19), the body of a male aged about 40 years old was found wedged in the mud on the banks of the Klip River near Hobsland.

The man was identified as the person who drowned on Sunday after he tried to cross the river.

Divers from Pietermaritzburg Search & Rescue, the Newcastle K9 Unit and Ladysmith K9 Search & Rescue responded to the scene.

The body was retrieved by police, with forensic and mortuary services also at the scene.

A large crowd of onlookers gathered on the riverbanks to see what was going on.

An inquest will be investigated by police.

People are urged not to cross flooded rivers and to stay away from fast-flowing water, as they could easily be swept away by strong currents.
