New ink for Newcastle’s Sean Wood

At first, Sean believed it was a hoax when he was contacted and informed that his tattoo was chosen as the winner.

Technician Sean Wood (35) has been walking around with a botched tattoo for the past 20 years.

“I got my tattoo around 20 years ago during a phase I was going through at the time. We were a group of friends who decided to make our own home-made tattoo machines and tattoo each other,” he explained.

However, all of that changed this year when Sean’s wife decided to enter his tattoo into an East Coast Radio competition, in which listeners were asked to submit a photo of their botched tattoo in the search for ‘KZN’s worst tattoo’.

“After hearing about the competition on the radio, my wife decided to send a photo of my tattoo as a joke, not expecting them to pick mine as the worst,” he laughed.

When he was contacted and told that his tattoo had been picked as the winner, he initially thought it was a prank.

“I didn’t believe it until I had to talk live on air and then it became a reality for me!”

In October 2021, he traveled to Durban to begin the new tattooing process.

He was granted the option of choosing his new tattoo, and after much consideration, he chose a tribal turtle pattern.

Sean said he had always admired tribal designs. He added that turtles carried significant meaning to him, which is why he chose this design.

The tattoo was temporarily halted due to heavy bleeding, and he was asked to return in December to complete the process.

Sean’s tattoo was finally completed at the beginning of last month, and he can now proudly display his new ink!

Sean now advises people to think twice before getting tattooed by anyone…

“Save your money and get a pro to do a proper job!  Keep in mind that a tattoo is permanent. The ink will be on your body for the rest of your life,” he concluded.
