No water for Newcastle

There is unfortunately no estimated time for repairs, but they are planning to fix it today and as soon as possible.

No water for Newcastle – residents from across the town have been reporting that there is no water in the taps.

Members in community groups claimed the problem does not lie with the Newcastle Municipality, but rather with Eskom.

“There’s actually an electrical problem from Eskom’s side. This is affecting the treatment plant from pumping water into town and other areas,” alleged a resident.

Another message claimed it was a power outage at Uthukela Water and that a transformer is being repaired in order to restore water.

Preliminary reports indicate the areas affected so far are Lennoxton, CBD and Paradise.

Ward 2 councillor, Bebsie Cronje confirmed that according to the municipality, there is a ‘dysfunctional transformer’ at Uthukela [our bulk water supplier]’.

“Therefore, no water can be pumped to Newcastle. Eskom is already on site working on the transformer.”

Cllr Cronje said water would only be restored once the transformer is fixed.

“There is unfortunately no estimated time for repairs, but they are planning to fix it today and as soon as possible,” she said.

Cllr Cronje has promised to keep the community informed as more information is released.

The Newcastle Advertiser has attempted to secure confirmation from the Technical Services Department at the municipality. This article will be updated with relevant comment once it is given.
