VRYHEID KZN: Is the Junction Crossing the new crash ‘hot-spot’?

It seems that they approach the crossing, thinking it’s a four-way stop

This past week saw emergency services respond to at least three different collisions at the Junction, of which one resulted in serious injuries. The Vryheid Herald reached out to KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services area manager Frikkie Bekker to get his view on the accidents, since they responded to each of these collisions.

Frikkie had the following to say: “I have noted that most of these collisions involve people who are not familiar with the area. It seems that they approach the crossing, thinking it’s a four-way stop, or they ignore all stops altogether and try to dash across the R34. With our visible campaign at the Junction, we have noted with concern that in a space of three hours, there were multiple near misses last Friday. We urge motorists to please be cautious and vigilant at this intersection with the festive season here. I know that it’s an 80km/h zone for us on the R34 Dundee road going out of town, but rather slow down and be aware of your surroundings. Don’t be complacent.”
