Women abuse is on the rise

This year's theme is 'moving away from awareness towards accountability'.

Women abuse is on the rise, according to Gugu Makhubu, the Social Worker at the Newcastle Crisis Centre.

Speaking at the launch of 16 Days of Activism yesterday (November 25), Makhubu said this year’s theme is ‘moving away from awareness towards accountability’. She wants perpetrators of abuse to face their actions.

Makhubu and the Director of the Crisis Centre, Mary Dobbie said child abuse is also prevalent in the Newcastle area. They believe it has come time to end the silence on abuse.

The Crisis Centre team was joined at the Newcastle Mall by representatives of structures including SAPS and Lifeline. More activities are expected over the next 16 days.
