SAPS on stand-by as Black Friday ramps up

Police officials were deployed from midnight to prevent shoppers camping out at store entrances.

SAPS officials are on stand-by as the Black Friday weekend influx ramps up.

Newcastle Station Commander, Brigadier Leon Matthysen said malls were secured and mostly quiet. However, he reported it was busy at Game (Newcastle Mall) and Boxer (Terminus Street/taxi rank area).

At present, Village Walk, Amajuba Mall, and other centres are calm. Brigadier Matthysen expects the Black Friday rush will build towards noon.

He also advised residents to expect queueing at ATMs, but said SAPS was paying lots of attention to the situation.

Police officials were deployed from midnight to prevent shoppers camping out at store entrances. SAPS will also be visible at stores throughout the weekend.

Shoppers are advised to be cautious when getting their Black Friday shopping done.
