New council elected for Newcastle

The new councillors were voted in via secret ballot.

A new council has been elected for Newcastle.

At the first and inaugural meeting, held on November 22 at the Farmers Hall, all councillors were officially sworn in.

These elected officials will serve for the term 2021 to 2026.

Acting Municipal Manager, Vish Govender presided over the meeting until a new speaker of council was elected.

Here are your new council members:

Mayor – Cllr Xolani Dube of the IFP

Deputy Mayor – Cllr Musa (Sugar) Thwala of TSSA (Team Sugar South Africa)

Speaker – Cllr Thengi Zulu of the IFP

Chief Whip – Cllr Faizel Cassim of ActionSA.

The above councillors were voted in via secret ballot, and had to reach a minimum of 34 out of 67 votes in order to win.
