VRYHEID KZN: Pastor uses own labour to patch potholes

Pastor Phakathi mentioned that the potholes have been there for quite some time now and no one attends to them

Potholes are a serious hazard, especially to drivers who not only fear damage to their vehicles but also the possibility of a potentially fatal accident. Pastor Phakathi, who lives in Vryheid town, is one of many people who are concerned about these ‘craters’ in the streets.

Recently, this man of God was spotted fixing potholes in Boekenhout Street, where he lives. He says the main reason why he decided to fix the potholes himself is because he owns vehicles and uses them practically every day. “It is not so nice to drive on a road filled with holes,” he said. Pastor Phakathi mentioned that the potholes have been there for quite some time now and no one attends to them. “The potholes get wider by the day, especially when we experience rainfall. I saw no use in reporting the potholes while the municipality was busy with the elections, so I decided to fix them myself.”

He went on to say that there are children in the neighbourhood who play in the road and while he was fixing the potholes, one of his neighbours asked them: “Why are you playing instead of helping to also patch the holes?” That’s when the little boys decided to lend a helping hand and work with the pastor on the road.

Mr Phakathi said the potholes are now patched up with cement, but he still wants to continue fixing them properly using tar.
