Post boxes in Hutten Heights closed once again

It is believed the closure of the Gemsbok Avenue post boxes is either due to non-payment of the rates account, or to the rent not being paid.

The post boxes in Hutten Heights have been closed to residents once again.

Multiple postal service users contacted the Newcastle Advertiser over the past week, complaining they were unable to access their mail.

This was due to the South African Post Office (SAPO) premises on Gemsbok Avenue being locked up.

“It’s a battle to get our post,” commented one resident. The resident confirmed this was the second time residents had experienced this problem.

“Apparently a service provider didn’t pay the rent and the doors were closed.”

Residents have described their frustration and outrage at paying annual post box rental fees and then being left without access to mail including accounts, municipal statements, and other important correspondence.

“I already paid rent for the next year – it costs me R375 as a pensioner,” commented another resident.

Former spokesperson for SAPO, Nobuhle Njapha, who requested that inquiries be sent via email.

She then later explained she was no longer in the postal service’s communications division. However, she promised to forward the mail to the relevant person. No official response has been received yet.

It is believed the closure of the Gemsbok Avenue post boxes is either due to non-payment of the rates account, or to the rent not being paid.
