VRYHEID KZN: Illegal fishing destroys wildlife at Klipfontein Dam

One of the nets even had a cormorant attached to it, hence the bird life also gets harmed in the process

Captain Erasmus (Glückstadt Station Commander) – together with Conrad Gerber (the skipper), Cobus Opperman and Llewellyn Schwab – are part of a local angling club. The anglers recently went to Klipfontein Dam and found 400m of illegal gillnets. One of the nets even had a cormorant attached to it, hence the bird life also gets harmed in the process. Captain Erasmus says it is becoming a serious problem, since the gillnets destroy all types of fish species in the dam. All the barbels they found in the nets have died and were already rotting. Fortunately, most of the carp could be saved, since it is spawning time and two of the carp were full of eggs. Captain Erasmus expressed his concern regarding the access control at Klipfontein Dam, since all the ablution facilities have been destroyed as well. He furthermore implied that their hands are tied, since the culprits don’t receive the necessary punishment when they are arrested.
