ESTCOURT KZN: IFP capitalises on voters’ need for change

IFP Uthukela District chairperson Mbuzeleni Mkhize said that the party needed three more seats to take over the municipal council and was engaging in talks with other political parties

The results of the 2021 local government elections mirrored what local voters were yearning for when they cast their ballots on November 1… Everyone, it seems, wants CHANGE!

After more than a decade, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) was victorious in the elections with 47,311 votes, while the African National Congress (ANC) received 37,793.

The preliminary election results were announced to a packed Estcourt Town Hall on November 4, where political parties and their supporters celebrated their hard work during the electioneering campaign.

Municipal electoral officer Vusi Magubane explained that Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality was made up of 47 seats, which included wards and proportional representation (PR).

The IFP won 21, ANC – 17, Democratic Alliance (DA) – 3, National Freedom Party (NFP) – 3, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) – 2, and an independent candidate – 1.

IFP Uthukela District chairperson Mbuzeleni Mkhize said that the party needed three more seats to take over the municipal council and was engaging in talks with other political parties.

“The party has resolved that we can align with any party, except the ANC. Negotiations are still ongoing and we will wait for the right party,” he commented.

Mr Mkhize said the IFP had strengthened its support throughout the Uthukela District and had more than tripled its seat allocation.

“We started campaigning just after the national elections by doing house-to-house and village-to-village meetings, and that gave us an opportunity to engage with voters on social issues,” he said when speaking about how the party had increased its support during the 2021 local government elections.
