DUNDEE KZN: Ghost walk teases the curious and delights the sceptical

At this year's ghost walk, the local Moths laid a wreath in memory of these brave soldiers

Colonel Gunning is said to take up his position near a tree adjacent to the Talana Museum graveyard daily once the sun sets.

Other apparitions only make their presence felt on the anniversary of the Battle of Talana on October 20.
Or so it’s said by those who believe in ghostly things… The annual ‘ghost walk’ up Talana Hill brings together not only history buffs, but also those keen to test out the reality of the supernatural.

The event coincides with another great battle as well – the World War II Battle of El Alamein in North Africa, where South Africa joined the Allied Forces in giving Hitler his first major setback of the war.

At this year’s ghost walk, the local Moths laid a wreath in memory of these brave soldiers.

A wreath was also laid for the British and Boer troops killed at Talana 122 years ago.

It was a warm day until dusk, but as the small group of walkers listened to Pam McFadden wrap up her talk on the battle, a sudden strong breeze swirled around the cemetery.

Was this a sign that the Talana ghosts were stirring? At least Col Gunning will have company under his tree…
