VRYHEID KZN: The process of renewing a firearm licence

Very important: Please ensure that all copies are certified, which can be done at the Community Service Centre in Church Street.

The Vryheid Herald will run a few articles on the Firearms Control Act to assist the local SAPS. The main problem they are experiencing at the moment is that people don’t apply in time and then their firearm licences expire, or new applicants don’t understand the procedure. The law requires a person to have a competency certificate and a firearm licence.

An applicant must apply 90 working days before the expiry date of the firearm licence. The expiry date can be found on the front of the firearm licence.

Handguns and shotguns’ licences under Section 13 (Self-defence) are valid for five years; while handguns, shotguns and hunting guns’ licences under Section 15 and 16 will be valid for 10 years.

When an applicant is late in renewing a firearm licence, in other words it is after the expiry date indicated on the firearm licence, the licence cannot be renewed.

Requirements for application of the renewal of the Competency Certificate:
