VRYHEID KZN: Social Services office officially opens at eMondlo

"We have a responsibility to bring services closer to the people, especially in townships and rural areas''.

On Monday, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development Mrs Nonhlanhla Khoza took part in officially opening the new eMondlo social services office in Vryheid.

Speaking at the opening, she said that government needs to work harder to bring services to the majority of the population. “We have a responsibility to bring services closer to the people, especially in townships and rural areas. This building is real testimony of government at work.”

The event was also attended by a veteran social worker, Samukelisiwe Constance Moloi, whom the MEC said has retired but is not tired. Mam Moloi, who described the opening of the new offices as a milestone in her career, was the first social worker to work in the eMondlo office when it opened its doors in 1975.

“This is a dream come true. I remember when I first opened an office at the old post office here at Mondlo, I was the only person working in the office and at times I would be afraid to be there by myself. But it was a ‘calling’ and God is great, especially for the community of eMondlo,” Mam Moloi said. MEC Khoza said Mam Moloi could play a key role in motivating young social workers. “Not a lot of people have such a drive, particularly working under trying conditions. She (Moloi) still has a lot to contribute towards motivating young social workers. They must realise that social work is a ‘calling’ and not just ordinary work. It is where you are working with the most vulnerable, so you must be understanding and patient.” Inkosi (Chief) Mdlalose from the Othaka Traditional Council was also present at the opening and commended government’s efforts in setting up an office.

“This is the first time having a government office of this standard in eMondlo. It is really appreciated, as it will bring services closer to the people and create jobs for the people,” he said. The MEC concluded by thanking all the role players and stakeholders who took part, and also the NPOs who are an extended arm of social development. The MEC described them as the ears and arms of social development, as they cannot be all over as the department. The department said it invested R14 million in the project.
