NEWCASTLE KZN: Mediclinic Newcastle confirms closure of vaccination centre

Should the demand for vaccination increase, Mediclinic SA says this decision will be reconsidered.

As a result of reported ‘persistent low demand’, Mediclinic Newcastle will close its Covid-19 vaccination centre tomorrow (October 29).

According to Dr Gerrit de Villiers, the Chief Clinical Officer at Mediclinic Southern Africa, this decision was made after careful consideration and was based on logistical implications, including the expiration of vaccines and their value as resources.

The number of vaccination clinics in the community was also taken into account. We believe that by centralising vaccines at specific points throughout the community during periods of low demand, we can reduce the potential for vaccine waste,” stated de Villiers.

He said that should the demand for vaccination increase, the decision to close the vaccination centre will be reconsidered, in order to ensure the necessary availability within the community.

De Villiers also confirmed that Mediclinic Southern Africa continued to unequivocally support the vaccination process based on evidence-led research on current vaccines, which provided a strong indication of the vaccine’s dramatic impact as protection against severe illness and the risk of death.

We urge the community to take advantage of the opportunity to get vaccinated and protect themselves before the expected fourth wave arrives. Mediclinic Newcastle’s Vaccination Centre is proud to have helped over 3 000 people get their vaccines, as we believe that vaccination is our best chance at a healthy future,” he concluded.
