Ladysmith KZN: MEC hands over state-of-the-art library

The aim is to promote literacy and spread useful information

KwaZulu-Natal Arts, Culture, Sport & Recreation MEC Ms Hlengiwe Mavimbela officially handed over a state-of-the-art public library to the community of Somshoek, Ward 30, yesterday (October 27).

This library is part of the department’s plan to promote literacy and spread useful daily information to the academic community. It also seeks to encourage life-long learning through reading and access to knowledge.

This library will also provide learners with resources to improve their learning.

MEC Mavimbela said libraries are the source of knowledge for our communities. “By handing over this public library, we are maintaining the rights of our children’s good education with appropriate structures. It is only through education that we are able to supply our children with the set of skills needed to make it through the challenges of the 21st century,” said MEC Mavimbela.

She warned that anybody who destroys a library, destroys the source of knowledge for our children. “Here is a library for the community of Somshoek; we are leaving it in your hands. We are saying to you, protect this library because this is your life and of generations to come,” she concluded.

uThukela District Chief Whip Cllr Dlungwane said they are proud that the government continues to prioritise and develop communities. “There is no better way to invest in any community than by ensuring that they have the means and source of knowledge,” said Dlungwane.
