NEWCASTLE KZN: Eskom confirms implementation of Stage 4 load-shedding

"The implementation of Stage 4 load-shedding is therefore no cause for alarm."

It has been confirmed by multiple sources, including the Newcastle Municipality, that Eskom will implement Stage 4 load-shedding from today (October 27) until 5:00 on Friday  morning (October 29).

The power utility released a statement a short while ago, advising residents that Stage 2 load-shedding will then continue from Friday morning until Saturday morning (October 30).

“Over the last 24 hours, a unit each at Medupi, Kusile, and Matla power stations tripped while a unit each at Lethabo and Arnot power stations were forced to shut down,” read the statement.

Eskom said these factors have constrained the power system, necessitating extensive use of emergency reserves. Some generating units had returned to service and Eskom anticipates two more units to return to service sometimes today.

In addition, Koeberg Unit 1 is expected to return to service today and should be at full output within 48 hours.

Eskom has apologised for the inconvenience caused by the load-shedding and has called on residents to reduce electricity usage, which it says will assist with overcoming current power constraints.

“We remind customers that load-shedding is implemented as a last resort to maintain the stability of the power system… The implementation of Stage 4 load-shedding is therefore no cause for alarm.”
