Ladysmith KZN: uThukela delivers water and sanitation to communities

Water, Sanitation & Technical Services chairperson Cllr S Dlungwane – together with Special Programmes Manager Mr B Mkhize and the technical team – on Wednesday (October 20) introduced the contractor who will be undertaking the construction of precast VIP toilets in the Ganahoek area. This falls under Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality. 

The project is in direct response to sanitation backlogs in the district. The contractors who will be undertaking this project are DLV Project Managers & Engineers and Sanoqwabe Construction.

About 100 precast VIP toilets are set to be built in the area. The project will also create about 15 temporary job opportunities for locals. It is expected to take up to three months to complete, and about 100 households are expected to benefit. These toilets come with a ventilation system to help reduce odour.

According to the specifications presented, a hole of at least 1.2m will be dug before the toilet is installed to ensure that it does not need to be de-sludged on a daily basis. It can take more than a year before a VIP toilet needs to be de-sludged, depending on the number of people living in that particular household.

These concrete-slab structures are aimed at providing dignity and improving the lives of community members.

This handover comes after uThukela made a commitment to intervene in areas where water shortages are severe, as it strives to reduce backlogs in many villages. This will also reduce travelling long distances to fetch water.

Cllr Dlungwane said this project is one of many being implemented across the district to improve the lives of communities in need.
