NEWCASTLE KZN: Ntshingwayo Dam records a marginal decrease

The Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed dam levels in KZN were unchanged at 66,7% this week.

With KwaZulu-Natal dam levels stable at more than 60 per cent capacity, the Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam marginally decreased from 70,2% last week to 69,5% this week.

The latest weekly reservoir report by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) confirmed dam levels in KZN were unchanged at 66,7% this week, compared to 53,4% around the same time last year.

KZN’s main water supply system, Umgeni, recorded a marginal decrease from 74,2% to 73,7% this week. Last year, the system was only at 60,2% of its capacity.

“Much as the provincial storage capacity remains the same as last week, this doesn’t mean residents should become complacent. Water conservation should continue in earnest, as we do not know what to expect during the upcoming rainy season,” said DWS spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau.

With KZN being one of the so-called wet provinces, Ratau said the province relied more on surface water supply from dams and direct river abstraction. For this reason, he urged residents to report pollution to local authorities lest water security be affected.

DWS has also reiterated its call to residents to use water sparingly as temperatures continue to rise, leading to evaporation and resulting in a decline of water levels.
