DUNDEE KZN: Desperate search on for mum of dumped baby

If the mother cannot be traced, the baby will be put up for adoption

The Christelike Maatskaplike Dienste / Christian Social Services (CMD) in Dundee are desperately searching for the mother of a dumped baby who was found in a drain recently.

Sipho Sithole from the CMD explained that on October 2, they received a call from Sergeant Buthelezi that a newborn baby had been found abandoned.

A group of people had gathered on the corner of Gladstone and Bulwer Street, talking about hearing a baby crying from down in the drain. Onlookers removed the top of the drain and Sgt Buthelezi entered to retrieve the dumped baby.

The baby girl, who has since been named Ndalwenhle, was covered in a white and black plastic bag and had no clothes on.

There was no clinic card or any identification with the baby and no sign of a biological mother or relatives.

Ndalwenhle was taken to Dundee Hospital for admission, where she was examined and no visible injuries were found. Nurses at the hospital estimated that Ndalwenhle was born on September 26 and noted that she looked very similar to a baby delivered at the hospital on the very same day.

The mother of that child was never visited by anyone while in hospital and the story regarding her relatives was suspicious.

Ndalwenhle will be placed at Home Meah in Newcastle while investigations continue.

If her family cannot be traced, she will be put up for adoption.

Anyone with more information or who has details of the mother’s whereabouts is asked to contact the CMD on 068 541 7348.
