VRYHEID KZN: Inkululeko Children’s Home gets a ‘facelift’

Not only did they give the building a very colourful ambiance, but they have also established a new vegetable garden for the home

Dylan Smith is no stranger to Vryheid, since he lived in the town for a few years, but is now based in Durban. This talented young man is better known as ‘The Creative Yeti’, but he and his wife have also established a non-profit organisation which is called ‘Painting on Purpose’. This NPO normally devotes its time to informal communities and to underprivileged people. ‘The Yeti’ always includes everyone in a project in a such a way that you feel friendly and ‘obliged’ to take up a brush and start painting, not that it seems like work, since the husband and wife team create a fun and joyous environment when they paint. Chris van Heusden, a member of the Vryheid Round Table, invited Dylan and his wife Gaby to Vryheid to ‘spruce up’ Inkululeko Children’s Home. Chris says they received a letter from the Home regarding their needs, and since charity is the main objective of Round Table, they joined hands to give the Home a much-needed ‘facelift’. Chris says that when he saw the dark colours on the home’s walls, it made him feel ‘depressed’, since it should be a happy place for children. The rest of the team jumped on the wagon, so to speak, and the paint was sponsored by a local hardware store. Not only did they give the building a very colourful ambiance, but they have also established a new vegetable garden for the home. The day turned out to be more of a party than work! Children as well as adults were involved in the painting of the Home, while the smell of a braai filled the air and boerewors made its way onto the grill.
