17-year-old Nomzamo Buthelezi brought pride to the area after a great showing at the recent Miss Durban Face of the City Pageant.

Nomzamo competed in the grand finale, which took place on September 25. Competing in the teen category, she was short-listed into the final 22, which was then whittled down to the top five.

Nomzamo unfortunately didn’t make it into the top five, but is forever grateful for the experience and all she’s learnt.

During the initial semi-finals in June, there was a casual wear round, a swim wear round and a traditional wear round. In the finale of the Miss Durban Pageant, it was only evening wear and swim wear. There was also a production team from YTV and a red carpet for the VIP guests; from the show ‘Durban General’. The big stage was a new experience for Nomzamo, but she handled it like a pro.

“Getting on stage for the very first time was nerve-wracking, but as soon as I stepped on the stage, everything else didn’t matter. I felt so alive and the feeling was just out of this world.

“It’s ironic to me because I’m rather shy. I’m not always super-confident and I sometimes feel like I am not necessarily the type of person who should be in the spotlight… But as soon as I walked on the stage, none of that mattered. I’m grateful for the experience! I may not have won, but making it to the finals of Miss Durban Pageant was a win in itself.”

Looking to the future, Nomzamo is hoping to shine in other pageants as well. She is now a Miss Utrecht finalist and is super-excited all over again, hoping to use her knowledge and experience to be the first-ever Miss Utrecht teenager.
