NEWCASTLE KZN: Keep your children pool-safe with these summer tips

An adult should be paying continual attention to older children and be free of distractions such as socializing, home tasks, or drinking alcohol.

Whether you find the summer blissful or excruciating, it is important to stay sun- and water-safe.

Here are some tips to keep you protected this season:
  • When children are in or near a pool, an adult should keep a close eye on them at all times
  • An adult should be in the water with infants and toddlers, within arms’ reach and giving touch supervision
  • An adult should pay continuous attention to older children and avoid distractions such as socialising, chores, or drinking alcohol
  • The supervising adult should be able to swim

Pool rules:

  • Toys should be kept out of sight
  • After each usage, empty the blow-up pools
  • Avoid using electrical equipment near the pool
  • No running is permitted on the pool deck
  • A fence should be installed to prevent small children from entering the pool or spa area on their own – this is the best approach to protecting your child and other children who may visit or live nearby, combined with the attentive eyes of an adult
  • Keep youngsters away from steps or ladders in above-ground pools, and lock or remove the ladders when the pool is not in use

What to do if someone is drowning:

  • Take the victim out of the water
  • Make a call to anyone nearby for assistance
  • Begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or call for help from someone who understands how to do the procedure
  • Have someone call an ambulance.
