NEWCASTLE KZN: Programme helps feed more than 2 000 Osizweni residents

It is believed the food parcels will last households at least two months.

A Social Relief Programme instituted by the Newcastle Municipality has benefitted more than 2 000 residents from Osizweni. The focus of the initiative was assisting families left destitute by the July unrest.

Present at the handover last week was the Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu, who joined the provincial MEC for Social Development, Nonhlanhla Khoza, the Mayor of Newcastle, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba, and the Mayor of the Amajuba District, Dr Musa Ngubane.

According to the municipal Head of Communications, Mlungisi Khumalo, the handover of food parcels formed part of the ‘social relief of distress assistance programme’ put in place by the Department of Social Development, as a temporary provision for communities.

Khumalo believes the parcels will last households at least two months.

“We are aware of the financial difficulties faced by some members of the community of Newcastle and we want to play a meaningful role in alleviating them from dire distress. As a municipality, we approached other sector departments to work closely with us, and as a collective government took a decision to assist the residents of Newcastle,” read a quote attributed to Cllr Mahlaba.
