Ladysmith KZN: uThukela hands over water treatment works in Bergville

Cllr Dlungwane said they hope to lure more investors and create more job opportunities

Water, Sanitation & Technical Services chairperson Cllr S Dlungwane, accompanied by Ward Cllr Sgubudu and the technical team, handed over the Waterborne Sewer Network & Waste Water Treatment Works to the community of Ward 11, Bergville, on Wednesday (October 6). This is part of uThukela District Municipality’s continuing drive to uplift the lives of the people and ensure that human dignity is restored through service delivery.

Water, Sanitation & Technical Services general manager Mr Bongokuhle Mnguni outlined the scope of the water works, highlighting the fact that the project does not only ensure top-notch service delivery but also played a vital role in creating about 68 job opportunities for the local community.

“This project started in 2018 and took 34 months to complete. We are in the process of developing Bergville and among other things, our main objective is to upgrade our water works in the area,” said Cllr Dlungwane. He also said that with this development, they hope to lure more investors and create more job opportunities.

Community members who were present during the handover alluded to the sewage problems they have been facing over the years. They are happy with this project, as it is hoped that it will resolve the challenges they have encountered in the past.

Cllr Dlungwane vowed that uThukela will initiate an awareness campaign where, as the district, they will be educating people about the role they should take in protecting the sewage pumps. He urged the community of Ward 11 to take care of their infrastructure, as it now belongs to them, and not allow it to be vandalised.
