ESTCOURT KZN: Dedicated officer secures rape conviction

The Estcourt Regional Court handed down an 18-year prison sentence

Justice has been served in the case of a 44-year-old woman who was raped and assaulted in 2018.

The Estcourt Regional Court recently handed down an 18-year prison sentence to Mpostoli Mposula (34), who was found guilty of rape and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The crime was committed in Bethany, Bergville, on November 17, 2018.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan, the woman was walking home along a path. In an area of dense bush, the rapist pounced and dragged her further into the long grass.

“The woman was severely assaulted and when she did not want to give in to the man’s demands, he raped her,” commented W/O Khan

.

Managing to escape from the rapist’s clutches, the woman reported her ordeal to the police.

The next morning, Warrant Officer S Puncham from the Ladysmith Family Violence, Child Protection & Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit started investigating the case. Leaving no stone unturned, the investigators were successful in tracking down the suspect, who was arrested and charged. On September 9 this year, a conviction was secured in court.
