NEWCASTLE KZN: Motorists – avoid becoming a smash-and-grab victim

SAPS has provided advice for motorists in response to reports of smash-and-grab incidents.

“Those who prey on unsuspecting motorists have turned some pleasant rides into nightmares.”

This is according to Lizzy Arumugam from Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications, who explained how some criminals smash car windows or open unlocked doors, to steal whatever they deem valuable.

She has provided the following advice for motorists, whether travelling or parked:

  • Secure all doors and windows – thieves steal handbags and other valuables by breaking windows or opening doors, even when the vehicle is stopped at a traffic light or stuck in slow-moving traffic.

“There should be no visible bags, cell phones, briefcases, or other valuables in the vehicle. Lock all valuables in your car’s boot or behind the seat if it’s a bakkie.”

  • Be on the lookout for characters who appear suspicious and do not be afraid to contact SAPS for assistance.
  • Slow down as you approach a red traffic light at night, so you only arrive when it turns green and thus do not need to stop.
  • Be wary of people standing at traffic lights or intersections – they may be innocent, but perpetrators mix with these people while waiting for an opportunity to pounce and may even point to something being wrong with your window or get you to stop.
  • Never open your vehicle window or door for any stranger.

“If you come across road obstructions like pebbles or tyres, do not get out of your vehicle to remove them. Reverse the car and drive away in the opposite direction.”

  • Thieves prey on parking lots – always park your automobile in a well-lit area.
  • If you’re parking late at night, make sure you’re in a well-lit area.
  • Never sit in your car unless you are fully aware of your surroundings, and never sleep in a parked vehicle.
  • Always remove radios, CDs, cassette players, and other devices when possible.

“Never leave a child alone in a vehicle, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Bring them with you everywhere you go. Children frequently unwittingly provide crooks access to your car and things, putting themselves in danger.”
