Ladysmith KZN: uThukela introduces new contractor to install hygienic toilets

On Friday (October 1), uThukela District Municipality introduced a contractor who will be undertaking the construction of VIP toilets in Okhahlamba Local Municipality. Deputy Mayor NW Mchunu – accompanied by Ward Cllr Mfuphi, Mr L Mthonti (manager in the Office of the Mayor) and the Technical Services team – did the introduction of precast VIP toilets at the KwaSmahla, EMaswazini Community Hall.

This comes after an assessment that was conducted in terms of challenges these communities are facing. About 100 precast VIP toilets are set to be built in the area. The project will also create temporary job opportunities for locals. It is expected to take up to nine months to complete, and about 100 households are expected to benefit from the project.

Water, Sanitation & Technical Services chairperson Cllr S Dlungwane, on the other hand, held another introduction of precast VIP toilets at Khethani, Esbonelo, in Ward 1. This project will also create job opportunities for locals and is expected to take up to three months to complete.

Yet another introduction was held at the Green Point Community Hall in Ward 13. About 100 households in the area are set to benefit from the project, which is envisaged to create about 21 job opportunities for the locals. It is also expected to take up to three months to complete.

Cllr Simelane said that, as the people of Okhahlamba Municipality, they were happy to be the beneficiaries of these projects. “It is wonderful to witness such rapid service delivery, especially when it has something to do with improving the lives of our people,” said Deputy Mayor Mchunu.

The Khethani area (Ward 1) will receive about 100 units, as will Green Point (Ward 13) and KwaSmahla, EMaswazini (Wards 14). The contractor will be DLV Project Managers & Engineers.

“As the water service authority, we have different ways of providing water in the form of boreholes, including springs protection, which is a short-term solution,” said the deputy mayor when handing over hand pumps in Ward 13 and 14. In addition, Cllr Dlungwane handed over a production borehole in Ward 1 (Khethani), while uThukela District Speaker PG Strydom handed over a hand pump in Ward 22 (Ephofini) under Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality.
