Ladysmith KZN: uThukela introduces contractors to undertake water projects

About 2800 households will benefit

As part of uThukela’s efforts to ensure that communities in the district have improved access to uninterrupted water supply, Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko visited the Esikhaleni Sendlala area of Roosboom on Thursday (September 30). He was accompanied by Ward Cllr Thuli Hadebe, Cllr S Msibi and the technical team.

The purpose was to introduce a contractor who will be undertaking a project to install a steel water storage tank in the area. The water storage tank is a direct response to water backlogs in the area, and aims to accelerate service delivery.

“We are here to introduce the contractor that will assist in providing water supply to the community. We will not rest until every person and community has sufficient water supply. We will continue to make clean potable water accessible to communities,” said Mayor Mazibuko.

The mayor added that the installation of the 250kl tank with four standpipes will commence very soon. The project will also create temporary jobs for locals.

Sydwalt Construction was announced as the contractor that will be installing the tank.

The project will take about two months to complete and is expected to create about 15 temporary job opportunities. Approximately 2800 households will benefit.

By midday, Mayor Mazibuko and his team headed to Ezakheni C-Section, where he was joined by Deputy Mayor NW Mchunu; Water, Sanitation & Technical Services chairperson Cllr S Dlungwane; and ward councillors to introduce another contractor who will be undertaking the refurbishment of the existing sewer reticulation line.

The mayor committed himself to come back with a solution to resolve the long-standing issue in Ezakheni C4 regarding sewer blockages and spillages.

Deputy Mayor Mchunu introduced Godide Engineering to undertake the refurbishment of the existing sewer reticulation line. About 10 temporary job opportunities will be created by the project.

Addressing the community, Deputy Mayor Mchunu gave a broad overview, indicating that this refurbishment of the sewer reticulation line will sustain existing and future demand. “Improving basic sanitation services and bringing back dignity to the community we are serving is vital to us,” she said.

Cllr Dlungwane stressed his concerns and said that the toughest service delivery impediment the district faces is vandalism.
