GLENCOE KZN: Wrestlers back in action

Terischka is part of the Orange Grove Development Programme

Wrestling, like all other sports, took a knock as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 2020 and 2021 wrestling seasons were stop/start affairs. However, wrestling has now been given the green light to commence and KZN wrestlers wasted no time in getting going, thanks to the Orange Grove Wrestling League.

Glencoe played host to the first competition as it staged the Orange Grove No Mercy Tournament. 50 wrestlers from all over KZN entered the contest and showed no sign of rustiness, as high-quality wrestling was on display.

With the National Championships scheduled for October 6-9 in Pretoria, most of the wrestlers used the No Mercy Tournament to prepare for the Nationals.

The local Northern Natal Rhinos and Sarel Cilliers wrestling hub entered 20 wrestlers and were dominant during the tournament, but faced stiff opposition from the newly-formed Durban North Wrestling Club. Terischka Basson, a 13-year-old scholar from Dundee Junior, was the only ‘rose among the thorns’.

Terischka is part of the Orange Grove Development Programme and has been wrestling for about three years. In preparation for the upcoming Nationals, Terischka even took on the boys and did not back away one inch.

She wrestled with lots of class and seems ready for the Nationals. Wrestling practices take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Sarel Cilliers High School in Glencoe from 17:30 to 19:00.

Join the Rhinos, where they turn boys into men. Contact coach Steven Brown on 082 880 8629 for more information.
