VRYHEID KZN: Grade 7 learners dress up for Career Day

Career Dress-Up Day is a fun event designed to encourage career awareness among the Grade 7 learners as part of their Life Orientation curriculum.

Harpo Primary held a Career Dress-Up Day on Thursday at the school premises. Career Dress-Up Day is a fun event designed to encourage career awareness among the Grade 7 learners as part of their Life Orientation curriculum.

Research shows the importance of learners being provided with an up-close-and-personal view of a wide variety of job choices, as this makes it clear where one sees oneself in the future and also makes one aware of one’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as the skills and knowledge required to achieve one’s goals in the future. Mr Sithole opened the day with a prayer and shared a Scripture from Matthew 16 verse 18 with the learners and their educators.

Mr Mhlungu, who was one of the organisers of the event and also a teacher at Harpo, mentioned that, “Career Dress-Up Day brings hope to the learners, as they get exposed to different careers. When they reach Grade 9, they will choose the subjects they need for their future career.” The learners themselves were dressed in attire that represented the career field they want to pursue after school. There were lawyers, fire-fighters, teachers, health and science personnel (those who want to study Medicine), soldiers, journalists, and those who want to pursue art. In addition to wearing the appropriate outfits, the learners explained why they want to study for that specific job once they are done with high school. Different professionals from their respective departments were present at the event and shared a few words of wisdom as to what the learners can expect in the various fields of work. Mr Mthethwa from Mthashana TVET College outlined the different courses they have at the college and the requirements one needs to study for that particular course. He mentioned to the learners that they must not shy away from TVET colleges, as there are so many of them in the province and in the country. “Whatever you choose to do, make sure that education is involved,” he said.

Bongani Kunene, who is a lawyer, detailed the different types of lawyers and shared his childhood experiences. “No one is born a lawyer, but we take baby steps, day by day, in whatever career path we choose. Just make sure you do the work you are required to do. It does not take any sort of background to have a certain career, as your background does not mean anything; I wish you all the best and eliminate self-doubt”. Mr Gumede from KZN Private Ambulance elaborated on what paramedics do. “As paramedics, we do what doctors do at the hospital, but we do it on the roads. We transport patients to hospitals.” He said it is a four-year course and one needs to be physically fit, telling the learners where they can study in order to become a paramedic in South Africa.

Harpo Primary School then thanked all the sponsors of the invaluable event.
