ESTCOURT KZN: Municipal employee linked to whistleblower Babita Deokaran’s murder

Sanele Mbhele, along with five other accused, were arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder as well as possession of unlicensed firearms

Sanele Mbhele – one of the six men arrested and charged for the murder of Gauteng Health Department senior official Babita Deokaran’s murder in a drive-by shooting in August – is an employee at Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality.

This was confirmed by municipal manager Patrick Mkhize (pictured above) today (September 28).

“Our records show that his last payment was on August 20, 2021 and the general manager responsible for him confirmed that they are investigating his whereabouts as his supervisor reported him missing. The general manager also confirmed that it was rather not easy to detect his absence as he was on a night shift, which rotates on a weekly basis due to the outbreak of Covid-19,” commented Mr Mkhize.

He added that the local municipality had learnt of the man’s arrest via the media and will now begin the process to institute an internal disciplinary hearing.

Sanele Mbhele, along with five other accused, who are believed to be the ‘hitmen’ were arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder as well as possession of unlicensed firearms.

Ms Deokaran was a crucial witness in the Special Investigating Unit’s inquiry into the multi-million rand personal protective equipment tender fraud in the Health Department.
