Ladysmith KZN: Alleged hitman nabbed for killing taxi owner

A 38-year-old suspect will be appearing in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (September 28) on charges of murder and attempted murder.

The suspected hitman was arrested in the East Mine area of Vryheid yesterday (September 26) during a multi-disciplinary operation that was conducted by the Provincial Organised Crime Unit, assisted by Crime Intelligence and Ulundi Public Order Police (POP).

The team was following up on information about a suspect wanted in connection with a murder that took place in September 2019. It was about midday on the fateful day in question when taxi owner Khumbulani Mazibuko (35) was hit by a hail of bullets in Ezakheni upon exiting his vehicle. No one else in the vehicle was injured.

Mazibuko was rushed to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

One of the suspects was struck by the deceased’s vehicle and his rifle fell on the bonnet. A rifle with two magazines carrying 52 rounds of ammunition was recovered by police at the scene.

The Provincial Taxi Task Team has been investigating the case.

Now the alleged hitman has been arrested and will be tried for the crime.
