VRYHEID KZN: Skeleton found near Zulu Rock

The remains were bagged by members of Medico Laboratory and a postmortem will be conducted to determine whether the deceased was male or female

Last week Wednesday, children in the Nhlopheni area, about 3km from Zulu Rock, alerted a community member when they found the remains of a human being. The skull and parts of the skeleton were found between rocks. SAPS Glückstadt and the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) Vryheid were called to the scene. According to the Glückstadt station commander, Captain Erasmus, the skeleton must be ‘old’ in the sense that it was completely ‘clean’ and no clothing was found at the scene. He furthermore stated that they can confirm it is not the skull of a child. The remains were bagged by members of Medico Laboratory and a postmortem will be conducted to determine whether the deceased was male or female, as well as a possible identification from DNA samples. Captain Erasmus also stated that there is no sign of a blow to the skull, thus they suspect that the deceased could have died of natural causes, but this cannot be confirmed as yet. He also said they have quite a few open dockets on missing persons in the area and hopefully the postmortem will shed some light on the identity of the deceased. An inquest docket has been opened at this stage, while the investigation progresses.
