NEWCASTLE KZN: Another blow for the beleaguered Ncandu River

The SPCA's Heather Gero has expressed anger at the current state of the river.

Fish and crabs were spotted ‘jumping out’ of the Ncandu River recently. Their unusual behaviour is believed to be a desperate response due to the lack of oxygen in the water source due to rampant vegetation and pollution.

The Newcastle Advertiser accompanied the SPCA’s Heather Gero on a site visit this week, where she expressed anger at the current state of the Ncandu River and the effects on the freshwater eco-system.

Crabs leave the water in search of vital oxygen.
