NEWCASTLE KZN: Farmers unite to repair R34 between Memel and Gauteng

A trust fund has been established by Memel-based attorneys, Theron & Neethling.

A group of farmers from the Memel area have launched a collaborative project, to begin filling in and repairing potholes along the R34.

According to sources, the farmers have arranged to hire labour and use their own hands where needed. A local transport company has sponsored transport of asphalt from a Gauteng-based factory to the work sites.

Correspondence on behalf of the farmers explained the cost of the asphalt is the only part of the project not yet covered. A single bag of asphalt is said to cost R58 and the repairs will need around 1 360 bags – this sets the projected cost at R78 800.

Residents have been asked to make contributions where possible, considering the state of the road affects all users. A trust fund has been established by Memel-based attorneys, Theron & Neethling, which has promise to manage the finances transparently and openly.
