NEWCASTLE KZN: 30-year sentence for brutal armed robbers

According to reports, the suspects wielded firearms and demanded cash, dishing out beatings to get their way.

An armed robbery incident in 2019, has so far led to the conviction of two suspects.

Sabelo Mduduzi Khumalo (29) and Qiniso Phoqwayisimo Mbatha (30) were arrested in January 2020, for their role in the robbery and assault of a mother and daughter in Newcastle two years ago. According to a report from Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications, the suspects wielded firearms and demanded cash, dishing out beatings to get their way.

Through the investigative work of Detective Constable Z.M. Simelane, both suspects appeared in the Newcastle Regional Court again on September 14 and were found guilty as charged. They have since been sentenced to 30 years behind bars.

SAPS sources said more suspects are expected to be apprehended soon.

Commander of the Newcastle Detectives, Colonel JJ Kubheka thanked Cst Simelane for his ‘outstanding work ethic, insightful investigation, and dedication in securing an excellent conviction’.
