Ladysmith KZN: A passion for poetry and wise words

Anisa says the poetry she writes is about everything - from birds chirping to broken communities

Anisa Aroomugum (Warasally), a lady who was born and bred in Ladysmith, has always had a passion for writing and a love of words. Anisa, who is now 32 years old, found out that she had a flair for writing and poetry when she was at school.

Anisa explains that, “I’m actually getting into transcripts and I do my poetry alongside my daily tasks. Even when I was employed, I would make time to write.” Where it all started for Anisa was when she needed to get thoughts out of her head; this started as a hobby and it still is in a way. But now she has a collection of 100s if not thousands of thoughts, experiences and points of view, all written down. She quips that, “It was basically data that needed an exit point, going from pen to paper.”

Anisa has also been part of many writing platforms and one of the biggest of these is ‘All Poetry’, an international site where she has received many medals and ‘mentions’. She says that, “I was also chosen through ‘All Poetry’ to be featured in a poetry digest… It’s a ‘mention’ reward. I additionally entered contests on the site and won medals.” Her passion for writing was always there and her teacher, Mr Ramesur, was her inspiration to write. “He had been my dad Mr Ismail Dawood Warasally’s English teacher and was also my English teacher, who recognised that my writing had ‘essence’, as he phrased it.”

Anisa says the poetry she writes is about everything… From birds chirping to broken communities. “I speak through my poetry about what exactly makes up a person’s life – their being and soul. I additionally write religious and political poetry, but I mostly enjoy the personal genre though. What’s so interesting about poetry is that it is entirely left to individual interpretation. I play a lot with words and I love it. I hope to soon publish a book, as everyone in my life who has ever read my poetry has advised me to do, but I’ve met up with a few challenges along the way. So, yes, I wrote about that too.”

Keep an eye out for something on the shelves from Anisa, as she is sure to capture everyone’s imagination with her flowery prose.
