Ladysmith KZN: Cricketer thanks his coach for all the mentorship

"I would like to thank Mr Ramnarain for mentoring me and supporting me even when I felt like giving up"

Shakeel Narayaniasami is a nine-year-old who simply adores cricket and has made great strides in the relatively short time he has been playing.

His love for the sport began at the tender age of seven when his uncle handed him a cricket bat and started teaching him about the ‘gentleman’s game’. The bug bit quickly and soon he was going to the nearest sports grounds to play with his dad at every available opportunity.

As an all-rounder who bowls and bats at number 4, he gives all the credit for his numerous achievements out on the pitch to his coach, Naveen Ramnarain. Mr Ramnarain has been coaching Shakeel for a couple of years.

A recent match was played at Settlers Park, during which Shakeel took an impressive five wickets for 20 runs in just four overs for his team. He played against adults and still managed to impress his coach. “I would like to thank Mr Ramnarain for mentoring me and supporting me even when I felt like giving up,” he says.

Aside from cricket, Shakeel enjoys mathematics at school and doing tricks on his BMX bike. He says that should a career in cricket not work out, he would like to become a mechanical engineer because of his love for maths.
