NEWCASTLE KZN: Sign a will and leave behind a legacy

Statistics reveal that 75% of South Africans pass away without a valid will in place.

A will is considered one of the most important documents you will ever sign.

With September 17 being the last day of National Wills Week, the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) is encouraging residents to make proactive plans to protect their loved ones and ensure they leave a legacy, and also urges law firms to offer free drafting of wills.

Statistics from the LSSA reveal that 75% of South Africans pass away without a valid will in place. Without a will, your possessions will be distributed according to the Intestate Succession Act when you die.

While the provisions of the Act are usually considered fair to your dependents, your assets may not be left to the person you choose and may take a long time, and include additional costs.

“There can be unhappiness and conflict among members of your family, because there are no clear instructions on how to distribute your assets,” explained representatives of the LSSA.

For more information, to find your nearest attorney, or for assistance on putting a will in place, contact the LSSA on 012 366 8800 or e-mail lssa@lssa.org.za
