VRYHEID KZN: Life imprisonment for rapist

The girl said she has been badly affected by the incident and that she can no longer concentrate at school

A 50-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a 10-year-old girl. The rape took place in March 2019 in Ngome.

The man was in a relationship with the girl’s mother and would often visit their home, but normally left by the evening. On the day of the rape, he visited their home again. The mother consumed alcohol and the man stayed over for the night. It was at this time, when everyone was asleep, that he raped the girl. The girl informed her mother about the incident and they reported it at the police station, after which the man was arrested but continued to plead his innocence.

Regional Court prosecutor Nomsa Precious Nkosi led the testimonies of the girl and her mother during the trial, as well as medical evidence from a doctor. The girl said she has been badly affected by the incident and that she can no longer concentrate at school. She furthermore said she is scared of men and will never be able to trust a man again. She wants to do her best at school so that she can become a teacher and teach children how to protect themselves.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the successful prosecution.
